The Snohomish County Windjammers chorus was organized in October 1948 by Mrs. Lois Snoberger, a local Everett singer. She heard a barbershop quartet perform in Seattle and felt that barbershop music was just what Everett needed. She hand picked 16 men to form the Windjammers. In 1950 the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. (SPEBSQSA) granted a charter to the chorus. Over the years we have had many homes in Snohomish County, holding our practices in Everett, Snohomish, Monroe, back to Everett, etc. And more recently we are in King County for a time while we wait for our ’ÄúNew Home’Äù in Everett to be ready of occupancy. But no matter where we meet, we have continued to enjoy the fellowship and personal satisfaction that comes with the greatest hobby in the world, singing Barbershop.
The membership comes from a variety of backgrounds and occupations. We
have had opportunities, since our beginning over 50 years ago, to travel the World, singing in Australia Germany, Switzerland, Scotland, Wales, England and, of course, our wonderful neighbor to the north, Canada. The Barbershop Harmony Society, which had its beginnings In Oklahoma in 1938, now claims affiliations around the world. And we are proud to share those affiliations.
The Barbershop Harmony Society has chosen as its official charity Harmony Foundation. This foundation has the mission of preserving our musical legacy through support of vocal education in our schools and communities. The Windjammers enthusiastically supports that mission through financial donations, and involvement of youth vocal groups in chapter shows as well as outreach to local school music programs.
